Why I use WordPress to design websites

In 2006 (16 years ago), my partner and I started a dance school.

A friend of our knew a bit of HTML and he offered to create a web page where people could go and find information about our school. I was so impressed. It was like magic; my friend would write some code and a few minutes later, that code will be transformed into information everyone could see via the internet. I never thought I could do anything comparable to what my friend did. It was under the impression that I only people with computer science degrees could do that.

One or two years later, a friend of ours learned how to operate a software called Dreamweaver and he created a better designed website. He showed us how to use Dreamweaver and it was it was horrifying experience. I didn’t understand what was going on and I very quickly gave up on learning Dreamweaver.

A few years later, let’s say 2010, I heard about WordPress and how we could build a website with WordPress. I had no interest in becoming a website designer at that time, but I did find WordPress to be much friendlier to business owners who want to take control of their website.

Why I prefer to use WordPress more than any other software

In a previous post, I wrote why I decided to become a website designer, but now, I want to share why I will be working exclusively with WordPress.

  • WordPress was created in 2003 (19 years ago), originally as a blogging platform. It has gone through many iterations and every year it gets better and better.
  • WordPress is free. It’s an open source software, this means that there are hundreds of engineers donating their time in order to improve the software.
  • Designers like myself have thousands of possibilities in regards to the look and feel we want to create.
  • You can choose where to host your website, unlike other website builders who become the hosting company, they make their money by selling you an overprized hosting service.
  • It’s easy to learn. You can learn how to design a WordPress website within 10-20 hours of learning.
  • It’s mobile responsive.
  • WordPress of SEO friendly, this means that every website is made so that it can be easily found by the search engines.
  • There re thousands of videos and tutorials on how change its functionality.
  • It’s the most popular website builder in the world.

Although, there are many website builders out there, they are either too expensive, or don’t have enough functionalities, or are more complex than they need to be. I just have to add my voice to the chorus and continue singing praises to WordPress.
