Free hosting gallery website

Photo gallery with free hosting

As many of you know, I am a part time photographer.

Most of the time I send my clients their photos via WeTransfer or Google Drive and my clients find their own way to share those photos with their friends and family. Very often they share the photos via social media or they send them to each other via email.

But I wanted to find some other creative and value added way of sending their photos for them to see and to share, and I wanted that new way to be free or not too expensive.

For years I have been aware that WordPress.com offers free website as a way to promote their non-free websites, so I gave it a try.

I found four limitations:

  • The storage space is only only 1 GB. If I reduce the image size to 1024x X 768px I can add about 500 images (I can live with that)
  • There is a WordPress banner promoting proposing an upsell. It’s ugly, but it’s fair… they need to promote themselves to find paying customers
  • There is a WordPress icon on the footer. This one is not even noticeable.
  • “WordPress.com” is part of the domain name.

Check out this sample website.

These are the steps I took to create the hosting-free photo gallery website:

  1. Created a fee account with WordPress.com
  2. Under themes, I found a theme called Paimio which is also free and it looked like it could meet my needs.
  3. I wrote the title of the website
  4. I deleted that Navigation menu
  5. I deleted everything else
  6. I added block called Tiled Gallery
  7. I added the images
  8. I hit publish.
